Call for Papers: 7th Annual British Graduate Shakespeare Conference
7th Annual British Graduate Shakespeare Conference |
The Shakespeare Institute, part of the University of Birmingham and located in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, will host its seventh annual British Graduate Shakespeare Conference from 23 - 25 June 2005. The conference provides an opportunity for graduate students from all over the world to meet and discuss their research relating to Shakespeare, the work of his contemporaries, and topics relating to the cultural history of the period. All interested graduate students are invited to give a twenty minute paper at the conference, where they will be able to interact with a community of researchers in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare. All undergraduate students in the final two years of their course are also invited to attend the conference as auditors. We encourage a wide variety of research topics ? previous conferences have included papers on performance history, textual studies, critical theory, and cultural history.
Speakers at the conference will include Professor Kate McCluskie, recently selected as Director of the Shakespeare Institute, and Dr. Paul Edmondson, Director of Education at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and Shakespeare Institute alumnus. In addition to three days of panel sessions, all registered delegates will be invited to attend a performance of the Royal Shakespeare Company's A Midsummer Night's Dream. There will also be opportunities for delegates to explore the treasures of Stratford-upon-Avon, including historical buildings relating to Shakespeare, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and the beautiful Warwickshire countryside surrounding the town.
We hope to attract a diversity of scholars from around the world who will bring a range of perspectives and approaches to the conference. In the past, conference delegates have come from France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the United States, as well as from all over the United Kingdom.

Guidelines for Proposing a Seminar, Workshop or Short Paper Session for The World Shakespeare Congress, 2006
- Seminars.
Each seminar will have two leaders (from two different countries and ideally representing two different language traditions), at least one of whom has experience in seminar leadership or membership, whose role is to facilitate a discussion on papers which have been exchanged in advance. Seminar proposals and descriptions should encourage participants with a range of experience and allow for a number of pathways into a subject. - Workshops.
Workshops will have two leaders (and possibly, for some activities, more), one of whom has experience of running workshops, and may be concerned, for example, with editing, working with archival material, acting and direction, teaching method. Again, workshop proposals should encourage participants with a range of experience. - Short paper sessions (panels).
The usual format of these sessions is for three speakers to address a common subject for about 20 minutes each followed by comments from the floor. Proposals may consider other models, such as roundtable sessions involving up to six speakers.
General: preference will be given to proposals which, in their subject matter, reflect the international nature of the Congress. Geographical diversity in group leadership is actively encouraged so that the two leaders of a seminar, for example, may come from different countries or continents. Those submitting proposals should ensure that their membership of the ISA is current.
All proposals should be as detailed as possible and include a rationale as well as a list of problems or questions that the seminar, workshop or short paper session seeks to explore. They should include brief academic biographies of the proposed leaders and contributors of short papers. All proposals will be reviewed by members of the ISA Programme Committee.
